Becoming a varsity tennis player is an exciting journey, filled with commitment, structured training, and strategic guidance. Over the past 10 years, I've had the privilege of coaching and building successful players who earned varsity spots at prestigious schools, including Horace Mann in New York, Dwight-Englewood in New Jersey, Leonia High School, and Grace Church High School. Here's how we do it and how you can help your child get there too.
Step 1: Build Strong Fundamentals Early
The foundation of any great tennis player starts with strong fundamentals. Emphasizing proper technique in strokes, footwork, and positioning is critical. If your child develops these core skills early, they’ll have a significant advantage as they progress through competitive levels.
Step 2: Focus on Consistent Training
Consistency in training is essential. Regular practice helps young athletes refine their skills and develop muscle memory, which is invaluable in competitive play. I recommend at least three focused practice sessions per week, along with match play to build mental resilience and adaptability on the court.
Step 3: Compete and Gain Experience
Participating in local tennis tournaments is a great way for young players to test their skills under pressure and gain match experience. At Tennis-Prime, we encourage players to start with local USTA events, which are excellent for building confidence and experience.
Step 4: Mental Conditioning and Resilience
Tennis is as much a mental game as a physical one. Encourage your child to stay focused, calm under pressure, and resilient after losses. The journey to becoming a varsity player includes ups and downs, and mental toughness will help them push through challenges.
Step 5: Stay Committed and Enjoy the Journey
It’s essential for both the player and parents to be committed to the process. This journey requires patience and persistence, but the rewards—developing discipline, a strong work ethic, and the thrill of competing at a high level—are worth it.
At Tennis-Prime, our team is dedicated to nurturing young players, turning their potential into varsity-level skill. With the right training and mindset, your child can achieve their dream of becoming a varsity tennis player!.
